The Fight Against Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac and Poison Oak – How to prevent, treat and remove

Overview: The oil from the plants (Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac) causes an immune reaction that is itchy and extremely irritating. There are a lot of myths, misinformation and treatments that people use to try to prevent, treat and remove the plants, however the most effective treatments cost very little.

Most effective way to prevent is to simply use a washcloth and soap (friction) to remove the urushiol from your skin.

If not severe – simply run hot water on the area, as hot as possible (one of the best feelings), this will increase the rate of transport of interstitial fluid, which rapidly removes histamines and gives hours of relief.

If Severe (in eyes, mouths, lungs, etc.) – You need to seek medical attention for steroid creams, cortisone, oral steroid or what a doctor recommends.

Simplest and best way is to remove with gloves and pulling out the plant. You can also use herbicides, boiling water, or water and blue dawn mixture.

To Prevent Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac:

You need to scrub off the Urushiol, oil from the plant that causes the reactions, from your skin using soap and friction (a simple wash cloth) and clean any item of clothing that came in contact in the washer using any detergent. Do not spend money on any expensive or fancy soap or over the counter (OTC) items that claim otherwise. Blue Dawn works great, so does any mechanic soap (such as Mean Green Power Hand Scrub, GoJo, Fast Orange). However, nothing is as effective as simply using the wash cloth. You need to make sure you do not miss any area and put any items that might have been in contact directly in the washer in order to not get decontaminated.

To Treat Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac:

To treat any reaction and stop the itch, run hot water on the area, as hot as possible (it feels good), this increases the rate of transport of interstitial fluid, which rapidly removes histamines. There is nothing that can dry out poison ivy. Salt Water, Benadryl Cream, Calamine, Bleach (yes some people use this), and all the other treatments do not speed up recovery and simply remove the itch.If you have a severe reaction, this includes on or near the eye, mouth, throat, lungs, and so on, you will need to seek medical attention. It can be severe, which means that you will need either steroid creams, cortisone shots, oral steroids or other prescribed treatments.

To Remove Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac:

To Remove Poison Plants (ivy, oak, and sumac) – use gloves and pull the plant, use a natural spray of water and blue dawn, throw boiling water on those bad boys, or use some herbicides if you are into that sort of thing. Roundup makes a specific one just for these plants.
